Avondale Hills Farm has owned and operated a hydroponic leafy green farm for over 1 year. We have learned so much about growing indoors, flavor, texture, longevity, and specialized varieties like Mesclun Mix and Salanova to name a few. It all starts with a seed planted and attended to in our seedling trough
Each seedling tray holds 200 heads of lettuce. They are planted individually and grow in the seedling trough where balanced nutrients are measured and dosed into the seedling bed daily. LED Red and Blue grow lights then provide the light needed for growth. The inside air is controlled automatically to ensure the right temperatures and CO2 are present for optimum plant life.
The seedlings are then transplanted into a larger tower and vertically hung among 256 vertical growing towers. They receive a balanced nutrient rich watering every 30 minutes during daytime growing. To economize on electricity, our hydroponic farm’s day is during our nighttime and it’s night “lights out” is during our day time. We use 90% less water which is filtered directly from our on farm water well.
“Organic farming, just like other forms of agriculture, still uses pesticides and fungicides to prevent critters from destroying their crops…Over 20 chemicals commonly used in the growing and processing of organic crops that are approved by the US Organic Standards. Many natural pesticides have been found to be potential – or serious – health risks.” – Scientific American
